A unique social and economic project
LAKIYA – Negev Weaving was established in 1991 as an income-generating project for Palestinian Bedouin women living in villages and homesteads in the Negev desert. Lakiya provides them with an opportunity to develop the tradition of spinning and weaving, and to acquire new roles and skills in dyeing, production and business management.
Reviving a tradition
Historically, Bedouin women wove tents, rugs, belts and other domestic items. Today women weave articles for personal use or as wedding presents. Growing demand for Lakiya’s rugs, wall hangings cushions and bags is contributing to the revival and preservation of a craft central to the Bedouin social and cultural heritage.
Authentic spinning process
Lakiya’s yarn is purchased from Negev shepherdess, who spin fleece into yarn on drop spindles while tending their flock. To prepare the yarn for weaving, two strands of spun yard are skeined together, dyed and mothproofed, dried in the sun, and wrapped into balls. To learn more about the weaving process, click here. |
